“In Japan, we feel that craftsmen inject life into what they make, so objects that receive the love and caring attention of these craftsmen have a vital force, a soul. As we are a Japanese car company, we believe when a form is sincerely and painstakingly sculpted by human hands it receives a soul.”

CREATING LIFE THROUGH FORM

As your Mazda moves, the light dancing across its surfaces give it a feeling of life. To get the reflections just right, our Takumi spend two years and a lot of clay to refine the design. In fact, we use more clay for modelling than any other car company because the forms it creates go beyond the capabilities of digital modelling.

ADDING DIMENSION THROUGH PAINT

To achieve the highest quality lustre and shine in our finishes, we studied the way our Takumi apply paint to a vehicle. Their meticulous hand movements are captured by 3D sensors and programmed into robotic paint sprayers to replicate their technique and add that human touch. It’s a remarkable feat that exemplifies our commitment to craft.

“To create the original and vivid colours that Mazda is known for, we use fine, bright aluminum flakes and apply our own unique processes to them. The flakes have to have specific dimensions … and this influences how the vehicle’s body colour looks and its overall design. Our eco-friendly paints have improved chipping resistance but still share the same level of reliability and durability as their predecessors.”

BRINGING THE ARTISAN’S SKILL TO PRODUCTION

From designing with clay and creating with metal to perfecting the finishes, our Takumi are relentless in their pursuit of beauty and function — a quest for perfection now achieved through engineering technologies that elevate the manufacturing process to an art form.
